'Motor' magazine called the XJ 'unquestionably the most refined motor car ever built' when testing a Daimler 4.2 in 1979. I've owned and driven a good few! Still have a 'lovely 71 car now. It's insane how good these cars are on the road even by today's standards. You feel special the moment you get in and shut the door

In the early 1980s, I took a Jaguar XJ V12 out to Germany and regularly had fun winding it up on the autobahn. The BMW 735s would keep up until around 200 kph then give up. Golf GTi s liked to compete at the traffic lights, but failed. t wasn't common knowledge, particularly in Europe, how fast these saloons actually were back then.

My 4.2 still does 120mph even after lying in the shed for 25years…. Awesome cars

I still have my unrestored series 1 xj6
Nothing comes close 50 years on, it was the best saloon car ever made, it never fails to amaze me when ever I drive it truly superb.

No matter how fast he is. It's an underrated classic car.

The XJ in all its incarnations be it V12, 6 cylinder, Daimler or Jaguar variants is and has been quoted as one of the most beautiful saloon cars built. The Daimler Double Six often came out ahead of its rivals in contemporary road tests including the Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. A good example will still show so called modern prestige cars a thing or two in road manners !

My father had a Double Six and I had a 4.2 Sovereign - brilliant cars. I would probably still have the Sovereign but unfortunately it got T-boned on the drivers door - there is little doubt in my mind that my survival of this accident is very much thanks to the very solid build of the car.

Faster top speed and acceleration than a mercedes 450 sel 6.9 back in 1978.

Rolls Royce best car in the world, Mercedes S class, no way, this to me was the best car of the eighties. Think about it, . a totally unstressed V12 that gave the Daimler or Jaguar a top speed of 150 mph, but was also fun to drive and handled like a sports car.

I still have one of the last ever made I got it up to 260 Ks before backing off, at that speed it was so stable and was revving out at about 4700 …

I took my 2000 XKR out on a lonely interstate late one night and drove at 110 mph for 10 minutes before I backed off. The car however said, “what? This is FUN”

Yup, I remember watching the fuel gauge drop as fast as the speedo climbed! Mine was a 1983 Double 6 HE, sadly missed.

Pity you can’t see the fuel gauge! Having owned a 4.2 you could actually see the needle move once three figures were reached. It was said of the V12 that it could pass anything but a petrol station!

I think the series 2 is the best looking of all three series. Beautiful car in blue with the vinyl roof. I think this is a Daimler Double Six, maybe the top line Van Den Plas ?

My friends bought a 1987 model for £600! In 2005
They drove it to the Black Sea and back from London
Without any problems!!

Imagine what the economy is doing at 200kph? I have a 5 speed xjs v12 and at 200kph I would be doing 3400 rpm.

There was a fuel station coming up, so he had to stop.😀
