Please help me find Doug.

worm charming (also known as worm grunting) is probably the weirdest sport ever. But I knew I had to try it. It was quite the experience!

I was legit pretty impressed that it even worked! Nature is neat.

If you're reading this, thank you! I actually so appreciate that you've taken the time to watch this video! :) I'll send you a worm as a token of my appreciation

I actually looked up a study on this, and apparently it isn't that the vibrations are similar to rain. Instead, the vibrations mimic those of moles, a major predator of worms. They know this because they tried simulating rain using a sprinkler and compared it with introducing a live mole. The sprinkler barely did anything, but the mole sent all the worms running for the surface. It works because the moles don't follow them up. They even played a recording of a mole digging, and it brought the worms up. The amplitude of the mole vibrations is also a close match to those of a worm grunter.
The study is Worm Grunting, Fiddling, and Charming—Humans Unknowingly Mimic a Predator to Harvest Bait.

Wow the dune books were so influential they made worms in real life! Another Frank Herbert master stroke

This technique is also used on a real life survival situation when you want to use worms as bait for fishing.

A quick google search tells me that the average earth worm is 1000x stronger than a human... This man is harnessing an army. Beware.

Born in 64 and grew up doing this. All you need is a stake in the ground and use a house brick for the friction. Works like a charm.

The funny thing is- worms come up in the rain because it keeps them moist and birds would use this to their advantage while hunting as they will tap their feet on the ground simulating the vibrations of the rain to lure the worms and take them back to nests!

The correct term is called, 'worm grunting'. It's a long established old Southern way of getting worms to come to the surface for harvesting. The worms come to the surface because of instinct. The ground vibration resembles a mole digging. The worms are trying to get away from the vibration. Moles eat worms.

We have done this all of our lives in south Georgia. We call it grunting for worms. We did not have a fancy stick. We used an old tobacco stick and a brick. You would rub the brick back and forth across the top of the stick. I haven't done that in years. It is easier to just go buy them now. But, when I was a child, you had to get bait however you could and this was one way. As I got older, I had a vibrating sander that worked well on the stick. It saved a lot of elbow grease. Anyway, I enjoyed watching.

I actually tried this myself last year. I made my own stick; it’s pretty easy. I had the most success in shaded areas with some leaf cover. I was shocked by how well it worked!
