In 1987 a project called “RoboCop” was looking for a director who could get it to the big screen. It is said that Paul Verhoeven threw the script directly away after he read the slightly silly title. It was his wife that found it in the trash, read it and convinced her husband that the story offers a lot opportunities on various levels.
So it happened that one of the famous figures of the 80’s successfully came to existence. And indeed, under Verhoeven’s direction RoboCop turned out to be an action-ride, with funny scenes here and there and a focus on the tragic…
Basil Poledouris contributed a great score, a traditional orchestral one featured by various synthesizers and effects (much, what some would call Goldsmith-ish).
After Poledouris’ and Verhoeven’s first collaboration (Flesh+Blood) the composer was a logical choice for the director. Both worked, coincidentally after a very fruitful collaboration between Verhoeven and Jerry Goldsmith, together again on “Starship Troopers” ten years later. Enjoy!
