💗 Wintering SWANS - 4 Species Together - BLACK - WHOOPER - MUTE & BESWICK
Показать описание
Among the hundreds of Whooper Swans are 3 Mute Swans and a pair of Black Swans. These 3 species are seen in close-up together and it is interesting to compare their size.
There were 2 Bewick's Swans amongst them and they were the furthest 2 Swans away.
The good light helped with a full 1500M zoom to capture them.
I was pleasantly surprised to see the pair of Black Swans. None were banded or ringed and their wings were not clipped as they are in most zoos. I assume they have escaped from somewhere and have joined the 'wild' Swans. It was a bonus when the female Black Swan exercised her wings, showing the white flight feathers on the underside.

Every winter thousands of Whooper Swans from Iceland and smaller numbers Bewick’s Swans from Arctic Russia migrate into the UK, returning in Spring.
Rotting potato crops in semi-waterlogged fields are a favourite food source and the water plants and grasses they love are plentiful.
As the light fades they seek waterlogged fields where they are safe to roost and can continue to feed, using their long flexible necks to reach down for the fresh shoots.
