Surprisingly, waving the phone around as you suggested (with no prompt whatsoever) actually worked. Thanks!

Not sure how the magic works, but it did. My phone was showing that it was about 30 miles from my actual location. It is actually working now. Thanks for the tip.

November 2019: It didn't work on the Google Essentials app, but you can try the figure 8 rotational method (2:23) on the Google Maps app itself... it fixed it

Try this: Go to settings, apps, google maps, storage, clear cache. Then exit settings. Open Play Store and search for Google Maps. Click uninstall. Allow it to completely uninstall. Then click update. Allow it to fully update. After that open Google Maps and follow instructions to set it up. Use GPS as normal. This fixed my LG V20 and Note 4 GPS issues I was having. This may also work for other Android phones. Somehow Google Maps as originally set up is not accurate on some Android phones and Android settings cannot fix it. Also remember to do this after every factory reset.

My star chart app asks me to calibrate every time. It shows anywhere from 0 to 30% calibrated, even after I did the figure-8 thing. Thanks to this video, I understand what it really wants me to do, using either method or both. Unfortunately, it still won't go over 30%, and a compass app refuses to budge from what I know to be north, no matter what I do, so, either the apps are bad or my home's zoning/architectural map is wrong!

This improved (re-calibrated) the GPS location accuracy of my Pixel 3 as well. Thanks!
The instruction graphic in calibration section of Google Maps is shite.. I followed the second part : "figure 8"

Sometimes your google data file gets corrupted. Go to playstore and get GPS RESET Com.
in it go to GPS Tools and click RESET. Problem fixed.

How to resolve Searching for GPS Issue

Step 1: Go to Google Play and download an alternate maps application. In my case, I downloaded MapQuest app

Step 2: Open the MapQuest app. You will see that it picked up the GPS signal lock right away. Now, close the MapQuest app.

Step 3: Open you Google Maps app and you pick up the GPS signal. It never fails again.

Let us know in the comments if this resolved the Search for GPS issue for you. If you have any other tips, drop in a line.
