I've had quite a few comments (some now deleted) from people who either thought I was going to join them in some kind of "Yea! Praise the Lord! For in His Wisdom he hath made the world flat" mantra or, contrarily, want to attack me as some kind of Christian fundamentalist. It seems people carry so much baggage with them when it comes to the Bible they can't take on board what the video's actually about; a couple of old codgers of no particular religious persuasion wiseacreing about some writings left behind by some ancient tribespeople in the Mesopotamian Basin.

In this video Thomas Dabbs, author of Genesis in Japan, and I read and discuss verses 6-8 of Genesis, Chapter 1.

We have both taught the Bible as literature in Japan, to students who are (mostly) approaching it in the same kind of way as they might approach a play by Shakespeare or a novel by Charles Dickens, and we are looking at it in that kind of way, trying to visualize the text and get a grasp on what it is saying.

We are not aiming to be either reverent or irreverent here, simply to discuss the Bible as a piece of text, thinking about it in relation to its social and cultural context and looking both at what is said directly and what is implied. The version of the Bible that resonates most for both of us is the King James Authorized Version, and this is the version on which the discussion is based.We hope you find our approach useful and stimulating and that it will perhaps motivate you to look at the Bible and other great works of literature with new eyes.

===============================================
6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

Firmament = Sky, and doesn't mean we cannot go into space!

So let me get this straight…You explain the Bible and how the earth was created and the firmament, but you don’t believe the authors were correct about the earth being flat?…If that were the case…Are you to believe only parts of the Bible and not the whole book of texts as a whole?….If one would think that an author in the Bible got confused or got it wrong…How are you to believe that the creation of earth and the firmament are true?….It’s either, you believe the word or you don’t in my opinion….
