This movies portrayal of grief was so accurate and the seen where Chang’e just collapses broke me this movie was so beautiful

The version I remember is the one where Chang'e and Houyi were already immortals in heaven, but both got banished because Houyi killed 6/7 of the Jade Emperor's sons when he was asked for them to be disciplined. (Which is why we now have 1 sun) They became humans on Earth but they started looking for the immortal elixir to go back to heaven (which they eventually did) but later found out that the *liquid* potion can only be consumed by 1 person to become immortal (splitting it won't make them immortal). Chang'e and Houyi decided to store the elixir somewhere safe and happily live their mortal lives. Then one night a burglar heard of the elixir and broke into their house to steal it for themselves (Houyi was somewhere else at the time), and in order for the potion to not fall in the wrong hands, Chang'e immediately drank it and became immortal. I think the Heaven's still rejected her from entering, so with no where else to go, she stayed on the moon to look over Houyi until he died

I love the parallel in this part of the movie. The story of change says she became immortal and floated up to the moon, where as here houyi’s the one who floats up as change is trying to hold him back.

oh my god, i saw the movie right when it came out and it JUST hit me that the way he leaves is the exact same way she disappeared in the “On the Moon Above” song sequence

When Houyi went away and disappeared, I literally felt sad and emotional. This was the saddest scene in the movie. When you lose the person you love the most, it is very heartbreaking. Chang’e lost her true love again which was not supposed to happen. This is an emotional scene 😭😭

The goddess lost her true love again. I really cried after her true love left her and disappeared. Imagine losing someone that you love the most, and when you finally get to see them, you lose them again.

I like that they never confirm which version of the myth is true. (Either that she took the immortality selfishly or was forced to by circumstance)
