The firefly is probably the Earth’s most famous bioluminescent species, with over 2,000 individual species. And the secret to its light comes from two essential components: luciferin and luciferase. But while the firefly may have evolved its lantern as a form of protection, today the lightning bugs use their light as a species-specific mating ritual. Here’s what really happens inside the firefly’s lantern.

I've always enjoyed fireflys! This is the best non-technical explanation I've seen. Thank you!

Last but not least, fireflies represent energy. Natural energy, and economic energy. But it also has the meaning of economy and efficiency because they use their environment in order to be as effective as possible and in order to gain their energy. Fireflies are fascinating little creatures.

It's sad that I don't see nearly the amount of fireflies (or lightning bugs as my kids call them) as I used to when I was a kid. I thought I was just imagining things. Now I know I'm not.

I had never seen a firefly in my life until I was in my late 30's. It was amazing I was in awe like a child seeing something awesome for the first time. My colleague was having fun seeing my experience and laughing. You see I am from California and have never seen one in my entire life until that day...a most memorable experience nature is soooo cool.

I remember being in Central Park one evening with my partner and we were so surprised when we saw all these flying yellow lights in the bushes. So beautiful ❤️

Very simple and lucid explanation. Nature's beauties are truly magnificent! I didn't know that these little wonders were facing threats.

For anyone who hasn’t seen fireflies before, please add it to your bucket list. It’s one of those experiences that changes how you see the world. Like diving

I wonder if the fireflies consciously adjust their light patterns like moving their hands or automatically like a heartbeat

We don't have those in Finland and they are by far my favorite bugs here in USA. I enjoy watching them in the evenings. I feel bad that the numbers are declining :( I hope they never disappear I want to keep enjoying them as long as I can. Thanks :)
