The NC DOT recently approved the future interstate 42 and interstate 87. I-42 will run from I-40, south of Raleigh to Morehead City, which is about 150 miles in length, and I-87 will run from I-540, east of Raleigh, then shared with US-64, and US-17 to the Southeastern Virginia, and the total will be about 200 miles in length.

NC state route 42 will change to a different number configuration such as NC state route 36, and NC state route 87 and VA state route 87 will be change to a different number configurations, such as NC state route 801, and VA state route 323, so they don't confuse with these same numbers between the interstate and state route highway configurations.

I-87 is no longer displayed on my Google Map as I checked it out. Maybe they might change it to I-495, because I-95 freeway is within 50 miles of Raleigh North Carolina. But I-42 is posted in North Carolina, and it is shared with US-70.

Interstate 87 will not only be in North Carolina, but also in Virginia too. Maybe they should change Virginia state route 87 into Virginia state route 25, since there is no US-25 going through Virginia.
