Fun fact: in india the name for their version of the brigandine is the "jacket of 10, 000 nails" which just sounds cool

And that is how studded leather armour got mistaken into existence. People confused leather with studs as armour and didn't know those studs held plates to the leather

Finally, now I'll never mix up the plate covered gambeson with the padded brigandine 😊

I reckon that someone seeing brigandine and not knowing/asking what it was is what created the armour known as studded leather in TTRPGs like DnD

No no no . This is the internet. You dont admit you were wrong. You double down and do not change your mind regardless of new info presented.

Man speaks the truth and knows to accept and work with his mistakes. Way to go. I respect that.

The reddish orange example of a brigandine shown around 0:41 is a great closeup that demonstrates the metal plates on the inside. You can see two large plates on the upper chest, at lung height, where you want maximum protection and don't need much flexibilty. It's the large area around the 2nd and 3rd buckles where you suddenly have no studs. It might be a bit counterintuitive, but obviously the metal plates are primarily protecting you where the studs aren't as the studs aren't randomly going through and ruining solid metal plates, just on the edges to keep them in place. Below and above them you can see that we have many more, but smaller plates to aid flexibilty in the shoulder, mid-torso and waist areas where you need it.

gambeson is lots of cloth and brigandine is basically inversed scale armor

Deja: *Says "Brigandine*"

Me: "Ah, yes. The Phantom Knights of Shade Brigandine."

On a serious note, I'm a huge Fate fan. (The visual novel franchise originating with Fate/stay night). I wanna know how you'd rate female armor there.

A brigandine is basically scale mail with the scales on the inside.

Probably because back in the day they didn't care that much about distinctions like this. They were like "sword" "shirt" etc. "longsword" sure, but only because it's a "long" "sword"

This is so funny to me, because the very comment on the other video is what made me search "gambeson vs brigandine" which lead me to this video lol.

Love the use of the word brigandine while showing a gambeson 🤓🤓🤓🤓

So it’s studded leather vs normal leather armour

Gambeson: just cloth
Brigandine: cloth around steel.

Also note that there's generally a difference between a gambeson and an arming jacket, namely, the former is much thicker and used on its own, whereas the latter is thinner and used under other armor. I really don't like this idea that people would wear a 'gambeson' under maille or brigandine or plate, because usually they're wearing a much thinner garment that is fulfilling a different role than a gambeson would.

So in a sense brigandine is like a inside out plate mail just more civilian looking but covers the core bits
