Cube Reaction 2018 Model Overview

The Cube Reaction is a the German brand’s performance oriented range of hardtail mountain bikes. Designed for use on cross-country trails, this range of bikes is well suited to the enthusiast rider who is looking to take their riding to the next level, or even give racing a try.

The Reaction frameset has been redesigned for 2018 and now comes packed full of modern features right across the range. A standout point is the “Boost” spaced rear axle, by making the rear axle wider you gain more clearance for wider tyres as well as a stiffer rear end of the bike, it also allows for the wheel to made stronger and stiffer as well. This translates to a bike that feels more planted in rough terrain as well as having a quick response when accelerating or railing a berm.

The frame also has internal cable routing for a nice clean look and less chance of damaging cables when riding in rough terrain or even when transporting the bike. This includes the provision for a “Stealth” dropper seatpost should you wish to add one, giving this bike great potential for upgrades to dial it in to each rider’s preferences.

This year the Reaction is available in Pro and Race models, with the race being spec’d the higher of the two. The key differences lie in the drivetrain and the suspension fork.

While the suspension on both bikes is courtesy of RockShox, the Race model comes equipped with lighter and more adjustable Recon fork, over the slightly simpler fork on the Pro. While the Pro still comes equipped with the exceptional Shimano XT drivetrain offering riders a wide selections of gears through the 2x11 setup, the up-spec Race models comes fitted with the brand new and game changing Sram GX Eagle 1x12. The advantage of a 1x12 drivetrain over any other is that it provides the simplest shifting with only one lever to operate, but still a massive range of gear ratios available. Also, doing away with front derailleur saves on weight and also means a greatly reduced chance of dropping a chain in rough terrain.

I have one of these and I am delighted with it. The best aspect for me are the gears, which are superb. The gear changing is really precise. I have kept the original front derailleur. One word of warning: the standard Schwalbe tyres are harder to get off than a nun's knickers. Even in a nice warm garage, let alone when the tyres are covered in mud and it's freezing cold in a trail in the middle of nowhere. Do yourself a favour and get a set of tubeless tyres. The standard Alexrim wheels are tubeless compatible.
