How the "mobilities of care" is starting to change the way people think about bicycle transportation in cities.

the low hanging fruit is school traffic. some cities even have a weekly bike bus event to encourage children participation. university students are often cash poor and energy rich...biking may help them raise their standard of living!

It would be great if it was easier for kids to ride bikes to school, in my town it is school holidays & there is a dramatic decrease in peak hour car traffic (I eBike for as many local trips as possible).

The amount of problems we humans continue to create when the only problem is the presence of cars in urban environments.

Great idea. I work from home in the UK and never found the term commute to describe my cycling activities since I WFH, but obviously still need to get around if going to a cafe or to get groceries etc. I imagine there are many more in this category now with working from home being more prevalent.

I live in the country and my only transport is my bike. No bike infrastructure here or in the local town. I believe the what you are talking about is actually already called utility cycling.

Very interesting video, but just a small technical detail: the sound from the part when Karen Labree speaks is entirely on the "right" side. When you listen with headphones it's a bit annoying... even if it's recorded in mono it's better to split it equally between the L and R channels.

Alreigt the premise of this video is a good one, as well as the topic. they idea of bike lanes for generall travel is good idea. However, the term "Mobilities of Care" is stupid!!!! English has a word for this its called "errands". Yes, instituting Bicycle travel lanes, bike parking, and other bike infrastructure, for general purpose errands is a grand idea. Changing the word "errands" to "Mobilities of Travel" is Cattle Dung!

The term “mobility of care” is a poor choice for the bicycle uses discussed here. Don’t get me wrong - I’m all for maximizing the use of cycling to get things done. My heartburn with the term is that it sounds like the product of a new-agey focus group. If you’re trying to garner support for directing government funds toward implementing the concept, pick a slogan that is less likely to elicit eyerolls from the people with the bucks.

Trips to grocery stores and school are different from commuting now? Seems like splitting hairs to me

Why does it need to be referred to as something other than bike commuting? If I have to go to store for groceries, transport kids to and from school and places... I consider it commuting when doing it by car, so I still refer to them as commuting when done on a bike. Aamof my bike commuting consists entirely of these types of commutes.
