my personal favorite of the "black confederate soldier" propaganda is the photo of the regiment of black soldiers from new orleans where they crop out the union commander and claim the soldiers fought for the confederacy, when the story is that they tried to join the confederacy, were refused, and then joined the union army.

At the bitter end of the war, some of the younger generals suggested that slaves could serve and be given freedom afterward as an incentive - and the quote that was preserved in response (I could look up who said it, it's in the historical record) was "If blacks can make good soldiers then our entire theory of slavery is wrong!"

"The south can't be racist! Our slaves did a lot of heavy lifting in the Civil War!"

Lee requested of Confederate President Jefferson Davis that blacks be allowed to fight in the Confederate army. Davis turned him down. How Lee thought that blacks slaves would fight for their masters is one of life's mysteries.

The confederate congress voted to stop prisoner exchanges with the Federals when Colored Union troops entered the fight. This led to inhumane overcrowding at confederate POW camps like Andersonville.

TRUTH. It does hurt. But WE can learn from these/this history

The only thing I can agree with on that Facebook meme is the “mostly white Union army” part.

I read once about how the towards the end of the war the confederacy considered using black soldiers. But one of the politicians said "If black slaves made good soldiers then our entire ideology would mean nothing"

As President Lincoln once said, "Don't believe everything you read on the internet."

The South then said, "Read?"

Note that the idea of recruiting slave-soldiers isn't something insane; Islamic dynasties did it for centuries, such units include the Ottoman Janissaries and the Egyptian Mamluks. The fact that the South was so unwilling shows how oppressive of a system this was

I’m reminded of that Key and Peele sketch where they crash a confederate reenactment

It is more fair to say that, rather than slavery wasn't part of the Confederacy's motivation, that freeing the slaves was not a major priority for the Union.

the only meaningful exeption to this was the Lousiana Home Guard which did have many free men of color (mostly mixed race) in its ranks. But this was a company of men who were landed men, many with slaves of their own. New Orleans had a unique slave-holidng class that included creoles and mestizos and some mulattos. Andy has actally talked about this in another video some years ago. But the LHG never saw combat as they laid down their arms to protect their property from the yankees when the Union marched in to NOLA

About 100 black confederate soldiers in march 1865 when the war was practically over and they didn't see any combat action.
