Funny thing is that I never was much of a reader :p But having some books is still the best way to learn grammar and such ^^

I actually really liked using the translation apart from the all-Japanese of Minna, it makes you not rely on seeing the translation immediately. I really enjoyed the Minna no Nihongo series (well, the beginner ones, I still have to get and start the intermediate ones but they're super expensive), they are a bit challenging for sure when you're only starting out, and could certainly benefit from better explanations (and a teacher), but they're great so long as you can manage kana and have the translation.
I loled a little when you mentioned that later on the kanji had no furigana though. Minna is reknown in our circles for not letting go of your hand at all when it comes to kanji, at least in the begginer books. Everything has furigana. Even the kanji you should know quite well for the level. It was the one thing I didn't like of it because then it doesn't force you to recall the kanji correctly since your eyes just naturally go to the furigana.
You really do need all of the books in the series to take proper advantage of them, though.
Anyway, I had the advantage of starting it with a teacher and then going solo, so I "knew" how the books worked, which I guess made it easier. :)

Genki, however, I couldn't get into it at all! It was boring to me and a bunch of the exercises seemed to be meant to be done with a partner.

Interesting that you recommend Kanzen master. Have you tried the Sou Matome books? Not just the 500 questions one, but the grammar/vocab/etc ones. I'd be interested to know what you think of them in comparison with Kanzen Master if you ever do! (They have -some- English!)

Thanks for the video!!

Hi ! I have been learning Japanese for over hmm 5-6 years:) for 3 years my Japanese teachers(Japanese native)used Minna- minna was great in classroom! we used it as base for everything. Arai Sensei didnt speak English and Polish but thanks to that when I went to Japan- everything was familiar even kanji. In Poland when you go to Institute for ex German -all books are in German and etc:) for grammar I used that The Guide to Japanese grammar - it's free and available for pdf:) for listening I used the baseballs Tv programms:)

Have you tried the Marugoto series? I'm self-learning and I'm not sure if I should buy Minna No Nihongo or Marugoto considering I don't have a tutor.

I am beginner and I want to learn Japanese after 3-4 months (after my exams @.@) I want to buy "Genki" books for myself, "Minna no Nihongo" books seems hard for beginner like me. But I know kana and some words, sentences. Also, in my country, there is no useful resources for learning Japanese. Do you think it is good to buy "Genki"? I am confused.
