Disobedience by A.A. Milne is a humorous poem enjoyed by both children and adults. The poem's main character is a three year old boy named James who REFUSES to let his mother go as far as the end of the town unless he is accompanying her there. However, one day his mother decides to disobey her son(!) and walks down to the end of the town - never to be seen again. Although the King puts up a poster offering a reward of forty shillings to anyone who may know of her whereabouts, the King soon changes his tune: "If people go down to the end of the town, well, what can anyone do?" and we're left with the feeling that James's mother never was found, poor thing...

A.A. (Alan Alexander) Milne was born in England in 1882. He's most famous for his Winnie the Pooh stories, set in 'The Hundred Acre Wood' (based on Ashdown Forest in East Sussex).

In 1924 Milne wrote his first collection of poems for children called 'When We Were Very Young', and Disobedience was one of these poems.
