Finally a very exhaustive and practical video about Cub clutch. Thank you! I really appreciated the nice subtitles, too.

This video is to the point. I would add that this centrifugal clutch is quite heavier than a normal one, so that the shiftings are pleaged by a strong inertia. So we need to shift up slower than with a classical bike, while the rev-matching is very important to master while shifting down. Mind you, on a wet road, if you downshift without this precise blip on the throttle, you could even fall. I drive Cubs since 1976, and my conclusion is that they are more difficult to drive properly than a common motorbike. But it is worth the pain as they are more fun and more efficient than scooters with their CVT transmission.

Only been driving mine for about a month (on and off depending on weather and working on mods) and I've learned that 30mph is the "sweet spot" for 3rd/4th up and down shifting. Going from 3rd to 4th at 30mph doesn't make the engine rev so high and waste your fuel mileage and going from 4th to 3rd helps keep the engine from revving high when you're letting out the clutch pedal. Obivously lower RPM's are better, but that's been my experience so far.

I have also found that, while I'm learning my u-turns, 2nd gear seems optimal because if you are working the throttle, you're not going to snap your neck back and forth trying to keep the speed constant.

Thanks for posting that. Always wondered how that worked.

i used to stop my sazuki samurai jimny by dropping the downshifts. in 1995 the repair cost wasnt to terrible. it saved me from changing my breaks for 6 months. now that i understand a little more, i understand

Thank you so much, i just got a 110 super cub and was under the impression shifting down was a death sentence.

Wait you're supposed to feather it? I just dump the thing when shifting.

I got a question, i'm having problems with my shift, i do the same thing u explain in the video. On first the shift is perfect, but, after a while the shift from 4th to 3rd and 3rd to 2nd becomes really hard and the "friction zone" disappears, It almost seems like you don't pull the clutch properly, the mechanic told me that i'm wrong about Gradually release the lever while downshifting... U got some tips?

Sold my 600rr for this. Ain't gonna lie its harder to learn in the beginning without a clutch. LOL

Thanks for this! Just bought my Super Cub about a month ago, first motorcycle ever (never rode a scooter either), and I definitely need to try the feathering thing you talked about. I knew about rolling the throttle when downshifting for smoother shifts, and sometimes I've gotten it just perfect, but I haven't gotten that consistent yet. I bet it's because sometimes I'm feathering the clutch without realizing it, and other times I'm not. Unfortunately I live in Minnesota which means the bike is already garage-bound for the winter, but I'll definitely get back on it to learn this next spring!

I have a question regarding deliveries- what do you do if you have drinks in your order?

Would have been great if I only knew what ‘feather the clutch’ meant

Definitely not how Honda explains it lol

Your subtitles are super annoying and distracting. Good video otherwise.

I don't want to be an a**, but the distinction between a scooter and a motorcycle is not whether or not it's automatic. Pretty much all Vespas up to the 90s were NOT automatic, although shifted differently from the classic motorcycle shifting system.
