Ive found best way to use laser pointers is in how you end the session. when they are starting to get aggravated they cant catch it, as I have them chasing the dot round I drop a treat near my foot (I dont let them see me drop it) once im ready for them to "catch it" Ill slow the movement down a little and lead them to the treat by placing the laser directly onto it. Once they reach it or swat at it I turn off the pointer. By then they smell/see the treat and gobble it up. They get a simulated hunt/catch/eat. I dont do this daily, but every few days for each cat. Just one of the ways we play.

Before i ended with the treat fake out they would spend 30 minutes looking for the dot, anxious and unsatisfied. Since the treat ending began they can move on without feeling like something alive is missing/hiding in their territory.

True for the most part but my cat loves belly rubs and asks for it. If I pet his side he rolls over and spreads his paws for a belly rub. He closes his eyes, puts his head back and purrs.

In 60 years I've had a lot of cats. Only two (My current cat is one) have been tummy rub fanatics. Current kitty demands tummy rubs every day. This nutball also loves "Wet Rubs". If I wash my hands he runs into the room so I can "dry" my hands on his head. He climbs my leg and puts full pressure into my hands as I rub his cheeks and ears. He jumps in the shower in the mornings to get a leg up on grooming every day. Most recent previous cat hated water and touching the tummy. Current cat you need a stethoscope to hear purr. Last cat you could hear across the house. They are all unique.

The petting taboos depend on the cat. If you've had your cat since they were a baby, and you've always rubbed their belly or face, they probably don't mind it. Probably even enjoy it. My two cats were born in my house (I was fostering a pregnant stray) and they absolutely love face and tummy rubs.

The "slow blink" is a very important way cats communicate. Don't underestimate the importance of this facial expression.

Interestingly enough, my cat is determined to have belly rubs and even rolls over to have his tummy gently brushed during grooming sessions, purring non-stop. He always indicates when he's had enough though by rolling right side up again. I'm glad he enjoys this because he is a medium-hair with very curly tummy fur that really does need to be brushed daily to avoid tangles.

Many good points. We've had about 60 stray interactions and rehabs in the past 20 years and seen all these actions. Head bumping is another action they do all the time. And we have had hundreds of these over the years. And they seem to really be social with each other and us when you're face to face. The tummy rub? I think that one may be a judgement call. Some of ours will lay on your lap or near you and let you rub their bellys for half an hour straight. I don't encourage the biting, no matter how gentle. Cat's have a tendency to increase the pressure, the more you allow it. They don't realize we don't have the tuff skin and protective fur, to curb those sharp teeth. So what I do is a vocal ouch, and pass up the bitting after it gets a little too rough. They learn pretty quickly and stop usually right away. Plus you wouldn't want them to feel comfortable doing that with young children. Just like hand play. Those sharp claws are quick to put a good deep scratch, easily infected. So over stimulation during hand play is good to avoid as well. Same reason.
Good vids though.

One strategy with the laser pointer is to end its path onto a toy or other physical object so that once the cat catches up to it there is a tactile reward.

I learned more about understanding cats behavior from this video. It's like the Rosetta stone for cats. U have increased my ability to communicate with someone I care about and interact with daily. Thank u

Pretty good video, but my cats LOVE to have their faces rubbed. I think that's just another trust issue and caution is only needed around a new or stranger cat.

IDK...both my cats like belly rubs and face rubs (each in a slightly different area). Both love their neck petted and brushed. As far as laser pointer play, one barely cares about it (a bit older), the other loves it. The key is to turn off the pointer once it's "under their paw", then praise, and pet them a little. At least Morty isn't bringing home birds anymore. (yes, you must praise them for that too! Then reluctantly collecting and disposing of the gift 😀)

Thank you for the last one! So many people have no problem waking their cats up when it is not necessary! Cats know better than us! If they are laying down, they are tired!

Very 1st item: shows multiple cats who clearly enjoy & welcome belly rubs & scritchies. Some like it, some don't, some like it from certain people or certain ways or times or lengths or...w/e.

The Rule: Take your cue from the cat (Basically, get "consent" if you actually care about others besides yourself.) & learn the signs of "plz"..."that's enough"...etc

Petting/touching their face falls under this category as well. With a cat that likes it & a person who knows how...well, I've had more than one cat push their face HARD into my hand to get more lol

End laser pointer sessions with a real toy...ofc. You wouldn't invite people over & be like, "Well, YEAH it smells great in here! Dinner's gonna be awesome!" & have them leave without eating.

My cat loves her belly being rubbed and groomed. She will grab her brush and show me where she wants to be brushed.

Let's talk about number 1 shall we? Wish my cats didn't wake me up during my much needed "person" sleep! Not like they have to get up in the morning and drive a car! Where's the mutual respect, hah?? LOL

I don’t even know where to begin… Every cat is different. My cat loves having his stomach rubbed when he’s laying on his back. Seriously loves it. He also likes me to pet his face… I don’t overdo it and I keep it on the mild side… But he certainly prefers me to rub the top of his head. That makes him go crazy. In a good way. When he wants me to massage his head, he will push my hand until I start doing it. We are incredibly bonded.
