MODEL ORGANISMS

A model organism is a non-human species that is studied in order to try to provide insight into the biological workings of another organism. These organisms can be critical in research where experimentation on other animals would be unfeasible or un ethical. Research using model organisms is only possible thanks to the common descent of all living things, which has resulted in high levels of similarity in biochemical processes and anatomy. Although a lot of information can be gleaned by studying model organisms, extrapolating data to other organisms needs to be done carefully. Model organisms can be chosen for a variety of reasons. Typically, they need to be small, live short lives, and be breed easily. You couldn’t easily conduct an experiment on 100 elephants. Commonly used model organisms include fruit flies, Arabidopsis, mice, and E. coli. Use of model organisms in research requires approval. It must be shown that there are great benefits from the knowledge gained, that pain and suffering is minimized, as few animals are used as possible, and there are no alternative options to animal use.
