Keir Starmer meets with metro mayors: 'I'm a great believer in devolution'

The prime minister and his deputy, Angela Rayner, met with regional mayors in England on just their fifth day in office.

The government drafted a devolution bill to be launched as part of next week's king speech. Starmer used the meeting to underline the party's desire for a new wave of deals which could see local authorities take over everything, from public transport to infrastructure and skills funding. Starmer told the mayors, "I'm a great believer in the idea that those with skin in the game, those that know their communities, make much better decisions than people sitting in Westminster and Whitehall".

Metro Mayors are not the best way to deliver devolution, particularly as they face no real accountability in the same way that a Prime Minister or First Minister would.

Of course, he does! He can assign blame when things go wrong, and he is not strong enough to lead. Next, he allows the EU to manage everything else, and he is done.

Devolution is just another way of 'deflecting the blame', on to other people...

Just a more tiered and convoluted system in which corruption is more easily hidden.

Except for the UK Parliament, he would prefer to return power to the central administration of the EU.

Starmer hands more power to the mayors so when it goes pear-shaped he can point the blame...

This LoveFest will end in tears. A lot of us in London are completely unrepresented by Sadiq Kahn who only looks out for his political allies and voting base. For us, and millions of others, more devolved power will mean more unwanted interference in our daily lives by hostile and arrogant little Napoleons.

How about devolution for the English, or is that not part of the plan under Starmergeddon?
