Among my first thought, that the name of the EP housing this Rivière Monk magnum opus, Supercruz, is aesthetically badass, I progressed to wonder, “What does it mean? Or -- what is it in reference to?” Could supercruz be the Portuguese equivalent of supercruise, defined as a vacation getaway for Marvel’s finest? More likely, could it be the name of a Caribbean mecca where families from the burbs bon voyage at the beginning of each summer? Okay Google, do your thing.

Turns out “supercruise” refers to the moment in flight when supersonic speed is sustained without the use of afterburners. Not everyone knows planes, so to find some common ground, this is the Toyota Prius of fuel-efficiency with the speed and swagger of a McLaren F1. Even more simply, we realize supercruise at the 1 minute 40 second mark of “Au Large,” when pulsating synths begin to race Usain Bolt laps around this track.

By choosing to create Distile Records, cousins Kilian & Cédric understood that the creative control of Rivière Monk was theirs alone, but as a result, supercruise career growth could take longer to achieve. Born in the Antilles and raised between Caribbean playas and Parisian boulevards, the music of Rivière Monk carries themes of travel and exploration in-tune with Polo & Pan, along with the evocative nature of neighboring artist, The Blaze. As the French often do, Monk keeps beauty top of mind, primarily through the cosmic, psychedelic branding, born out of the inventive eye of graphic designer, Beax.

While today, Rivière Monk has yet to eclipse 1,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, with enough awareness, we’re confident that they can add a comma and 3 more zeros to that number by 2020. Take a supercruise through the collection when you’ve got the chance.
