Some of the toughest men I’ve known have been Shotokan Karateka. Make no mistake, take away all the pomp and bullshit, Shotokan’s brilliance is in its simplicity. Trained correctly it’s easily one of the most effective fighting styles.

A karateka are basically a walking tank.
I am an old Shotokan karateka showing my respect to the subject.

Shotokahn was my first discipline. Nothing but work! Thank you Chadi.

Chadi was talking about the minor leg reap. Yes it's not as refined as Judo's but the reason it's just as effective is you're setting it up with strikes. The strikes bring your opponents attention up high. And that split second is all you really need to land a solid technique

Jigoro Kano himself saw Karate as "a part of Judo". In 1931 he submitted a report to the ministry of culture entitled “Karate as a Part of Judo”.

Thanks for covering sweeps and grappling in karate. A somewhat lost, often forgotten part of the tradition.

Gotta say though, I am not a fan of sacrifice throws for self-defense or military applications. Stay on your feet! In fact this is a big difference between classical karate and say judo ... if you look at e.g. Funakoshi's early texts that include throws, tori never goes down with uke.

See also differences between Brazilian and Japanese ju-jutsu.

This is Japanese Self Defense Force's Sensei. Great stuff. Thanks.

From my experience with Chinese military methods, training is done in uneven terrain and as close as real combat conditions as possible. Also techniques must work with the gear soldiers carry e.g., canteen, combat pack etc.

Leg reaps are awesome.

Learn to time them and do them elegantly and nobody is safe.

The MMA crowd and the BJJ bros are the first and most easy to take down with these. They never know what hit them even if you keep doing it again and again, because in Judo you train for timing and movement, so it doesn't matter if they know it's coming if they don't understand how it works IN THEIR BODY.

Korean taekwondo originated from Shotokan Karate. Founder of taekwondo was a trainee of Shotokan.

I am in my forties, most of the martial arts popular in my youth were considered McDojo( the glory was stolen by Kyokushin, Kickboxing, Muaythai and MMA), but if you go check out the old school stuff, old school karate kumite footage of Mikio Yahara, these are point sparring but these guys could fight, you can see they had balance, speed, accuracy, their guards are active (you can't just hold you hands up and have zero awareness). For a TMA they could throw down and with very little modification they will destroy another fighter even in a ring. Check up Mikio Yahara and the Karateka of that era.

Self defence for when people are actively trying to kill you (& you don’t have a weapon of your own) follows a similar pattern in all systems around the world, wallop them, take them down, hit them again 😉🇯🇵

What's the red white belt at 1:42? When I was 16 (in a past life lol), my Japanese instructor had one. He used to say, it was just a belt to hold up his trousers lol. Nice bloke he was too!

There is a connection with Japanese Jujutsu, Okinawan wrestling and Kenjutsu that was lost with time as Japan expected karate to take on the role of a striking art. That linked was weakens already in the first generations of karate in Japan and the opening of the Mae becoming further apart led to interpretations of the techniques that were not contextual. Self defense happened at short range like much of the interactions embedded in the katas which look nothing like the point sparring we see today.

That being said Sokkon Matsumura Sensei who thought the founder of Shotokan (Funakoshi sensei) briefly as well as his two teachers (Itotsu and Azato senseis) spent three years in Japan studying with the Satsuma samurai clan. Perhaps with your experience you could examine Shotokan kata and find those connections. A good place to start is the Heian aka Pinan Kata series. It was developed by Itotsu sensei and it contains O goshi, Morote Seio Nage, Yagura Nage and other things in common with Judo. Some of these connections would require more research however the Satsuma practiced Yoshin Ryu so maybe that is where the common ground lies.

In any form of Combat Martial Arts all moves and counters should be for the purpose of killing or mortal wounding as to where the enemy is incapable to fight anymore, this must happen in the shortest time frame.

I didn’t know there was a military style of Shotokan Karate! I’d love to learn this if it’s available somewhere!

the Japanese love that formulaic style of "imagine this situation" just like in all koryu jujutsu.

Goju ryu is closer to wrestling than Shotokan they teach you lots of grappling there.

Okay gonna hurt some feelings.
Shoto Kan was not considered “TRUE KEMPO” by the Motobu Uddin Uchinanchu Royal Family of Okinawa.
Kingu published a picture of Funikoshi instead of Choki Motobu who killed a Boxer who had beaten all Jiu Jitsu and Kara Teka comers exclaiming “Das is das!” Is that all you have?”
Motobu mid to late fifties killed Kentai with a strike to the side of the head with a protruding middle knuckle.
The boxer died back enroute to Germany.
After Kingu Magazine published the article showing Funikoshi instead of Choki Motobu who was a Duke in the Royal Family.
Choki stated “Funikoshi does not teach real Kempo of Okinawa he teaches a child’s art. And when I see him. I will kill him. “
This is per Gogen Yamaguchi who was with Motobu during his fight with the German.
