Venus: Warnings of a Doomed Planet

Показать описание
Venus is virtually a twin of Earth in size, mass and bulk composition; much more like our planet than is Mars. Yet it has gone down a completely different – and deadly – evolutionary path. Experts share valuable lessons from Venus on the origins of life, acid rain, ozone loss, global warming and other questions. They make the passionate case for further exploring Earth’s “evil twin sister.”

Now that's what I really called a hell of a planet!

I understand that Venus re-surfaced itself about 1 billion years ago when its crust split releasing huge quantities of basalt and incredible amounts of CO2. I thought that this was due to the cessation of tectonic plate activity after the planet lost its oceans due to the increasing temperature of the sun. This is a little like the opening of the Siberian Traps during the Permian that resulted in a rapid increase in global temperature on Earth, only much more extreme. It's difficult to imagine how human activity can ever reproduce a catastrophy on this scale.

3:11 "It does have similar amounts of carbon dioxide in its surface and in its atmosphere compared to Earth".... 3:28 "It's a planet that has MUCH more carbon dioxide in its atmosphere compared to Earth" Good work everyone!

There is so much we don't know about Venus despite its close proximity to earth.

Question: We say about Mars that it's got almost no atmosphere, due to the lack of magnetic field. How come that Venus has a rich atmosphere, so much so, that it could actually borrow some to Mars? It doesn't have a magnetic field, so why hasn't it been stripped of it by the solar winds, like on Mars?

So Venus heated up with no humans, no cars, and no factories. Interesting.

I would think that one of the largest differences is that Venus does not have a magnetosphere like Earth does. This is a huge factor in whether carbon is sequestered. Oh, this started to be discussed at 6:30. Nice.

Ok, I'm sick of seeing a commercial about "gout flares" from a lady that has a mole the size of Venus in the corner of her nose !

If venus is geologically active, then why it don't have magnetosphere ?

1:28 a picture of William Shatter :-) I love it when scientists are still nerds like me.

Earth: my humans keep putting carbon dioxide into the air. Venus: hold my carbon.

3:10 "it does have similar amounts of carbon dioxide in its surface and in its atmosphere compared to earth."
3:28: "it's a planet that has much more carbon dioxide than the earth has in its atmosphere"
so which is it?

CO2 is the weakest greenhouse gas there are much stronger greenhouse gases like :
Methane
Nitrous oxide
HFC’s
CFC’s
HCFC’s
PFC’s
Nitrogen Trifluoride and sulfur hexafluoride

Finally, people talking sense, as indicated by the person starting @5:55. We have a cyclic life, and although we can't change that, at present, we can at least try to delay the in an attempt to find a solution for the continuation of life as we know it...

Is there any missions planned to go back to Venus?
