There's another method you can use that might be better, because it lets you edit the path after applying the pattern effect, and it will re-calculate the pattern.

You can do this by adding a pattern *effect* to the path, instead of *generating* the pattern from it. To do this, select the path, and choose "Path"->"Path Effect Editor" and add the "Pattern along Path" effect. Then select the pattern-segment you want to use, and copy it. Then select the path again, and in the "Path Effect Editor" dialogue, click the button under "Pattern Source" that has a clipboard icon and says "Paste pattern" when you hover the mouse over it. Then adjust the other settings to make it look right.
