Understanding the Role of Edges - Part 1

Welcome back and all the best for 2020.
This week I want to look at the relationship between the structure of the composition and the contrast along the edges of the color shapes we use to cloak our structure. I use one of my plein air paintings for the discussion.

Now that I have advanced from just putting paint on canvas and maybe, accidently getting a decent painting, the composition process has become my favorite. As the song says, :"When the bones are good, the rest don't matter". These videos go right to how to construct a painting, what works, and what does not. You have illustrated something that I have problems with sometimes, when I want to splash in a 'neat' color and it messes up the path to the focal point and distracts, rather than enhances, the painting. Thank you!

Amazing gem as always. Loved how you used that pink to show how it could detract and distract. Very interesting. I hope my brain working through all of the gems doesn’t stop my hand from painting 😱 but maybe that’s a good thing too... so glad I walked into the bookstore and found your book then your generous You tube videos. Wish I could figure a way to put them in order, but it does not matter too much.
