Discover the Christmas markets at Trier in Germany, plus a little of its history too.

I'll try to pack in as many tips and hints as possible for the first-timer, and the aim is to give you a little inspiration to visit.

Our tour of Trier's Christmas Markets starts from our hotel, the Mercure Porta Nigra, opposite the Roman gates of the same name.

It's just a short stroll along Simeonstraße to the Hauptmarkt, and the Käthe Wohlfahrt pop-up store under the Christmas Pyramid. After a brief look around, taking in some of the stalls, we move to the next market in the shadow of Trierer Dom, or Trier's Cathedral.

We're taking a look at the Christmas Markets during the day, and we'll take a better look later after dusk.

We now jump to the history section, where we revisit the Porta Nigra, before moving on to Triers Römerbrücke or Roman Bridge. Next, we're onto the Roman baths and
Barbarathermen and Imperial Roman Baths or Kaiserthermen. A short walk from here, we're into a little more of Trier's Roman history, the Amphitheater. It's these well-preserved remains of Roman history that prompted Trier to be inscribed into UNESCO's World Heritage list in 1986.

Our next look at Roman Trier is the Basilica of Constantine; next, it's Trierer Dom, with a look inside to take at the mix of Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and Rococo styles. Sticking with a religious theme, it's the 18th-Century Electoral Palace, before heading back to the heart of old Trier. Here, we discover the Steipe, Red House and Apotheke before moving on to the House of the Three Magi and Judengasse.

Finally, our history tour ends with Karl Marx and his place as Trier's favourite son.

We finally return to the Hauptmarkt Christmas Market after dusk, before another look at the Cathedral Christmas Market, taking in the different offerings on the Christmas market stalls.

We close with a stroll of the streets before settling at Weinstube Zum Domstein.

Hey Gary, I'm a big fan of your videos. I watch them often as I consider them an oasis of tranquillity in an ever more 'untranquil world, to put it politely. I even use them in my classes sometimes. I was just watching this one with my wife and noticed your pronunciation of the city's name. May I point out it is pronounced Treer ( as in 'beer') rather than the 'Triyer' I think I heard. Best wishes for you and Janis. And happy Holidays. Greetings from an expat in Mexico.

Beautiful videography (is that the right term?). The Christmas Markets always look so cool but we’re still trying to wrap our heads around traveling to Europe in Winter. Great job!
