🎥 Video Summary:
Have you ever been offered a smart hands job, a network rack and stack, or a network install job, but felt unsure about tools like Putty and console cables? Michael walks through the process of taking on these jobs with confidence. Smart hands and rack and stack jobs are among Michael's favorites. They are not labor-intensive, often in air-conditioned environments, and with tech support handling the more difficult work, they can be quite manageable.
Use your laptop to console into network equipment using Putty and various console cables. Starting with the basics, he shows how to connect using a Cisco console cable, and use a USB-to-serial adapter to connect.
Michael walks through the step-by-step process: first, identify the correct COM port assigned to your device using Device Manager. Then, open Putty and select the correct COM port, allowing you to console into the equipment. He explains how Putty interacts with Cisco devices and shows how to troubleshoot by pressing Enter twice to get to the username and password prompt. Even if the device is off, Putty can display the bootup process, similar to a computer’s BIOS.
mobile hotspot allows the laptop to connect to the internet, letting you share your screen with the remote tech support rep who will configure the device while you assist with tasks like cable changes.
In addition to Cisco, you may encounter Adtran or audio/video equipment, each with its own console cable. Michael advises keeping a variety of serial cables, along with gender changers, in your toolkit.
Michael explains that these jobs are not too difficult if you have a technical background.
