Hi everyone! I'm an American from the Northeast (New England). I want to create a watering hole for people who want to discuss, learn and teach about history through YouTube videos which you guys recommend to me through the comment section or over on Discord. Let's be respectful but, just as importantly, not be afraid to question any and everything about historical records in order to give us the most accurate representation of the history of our species and of our planet!

Wernher von Braun: "...and finally we need some american cowboys who will be crazy enough to ride our german rocket horse straight up into space to the moon! Right Mr. Disney!"
Walt Disney: "Well, maybe Mickey, Goofy and Pluto will be with us!"

Fun fact: In 1956 Von Braun's team at ABMA was ready to launch a satellite into orbit using the Jupiter C rocket...all they needed was permission to do it. In September of 1956, Von Braun launched a Jupiter C with a dummy extra stage that had a dummy satellite in it to an altitude of 1100km and barely suborbital speed. There seems little doubt that the US could have beaten Sputnik, had the Eisenhower Administration desired for the US to be first into orbit. I believe that while he was making this film with Disney, Von Braun was lobbying to be allowed to send up a real satellite. 🖖✌

I don't know how much you know about Wernher von Braun and "Operation Paperclip", but it is save to say that he was a "controversial" person. The adjective I prefer is "disgusting".
The short story: von Braun joined both the NSDAP (the Nazi party) and the SS and became the head of Hitlers secret rocket program. He designed the "V2" rocket which not only killed about 8, 000 people in Britain and Belgium, but also cost the lifes of between 16, 000 and 20, 000 forced labourers in the concentration camp "Mittelbau-Dora". We knew that von Braun knew about this, because he visited the production site several times and was an officer in the SS with special privileges. He was a willing participant of the Nazi regime, one part of the giant genocidal machine.
Yet, he was never brought before a court for his crimes, because he surrendered to the Americans and was brought to the USA together with many of his collegues. He may have designed the Saturn V rocket, but he still was a criminal against humanity. We should never forget that.

Von Braun's counterpart in the USSR was Sergei Korolev, but he was fully Russian. He did receive assistance from some German engineers and scientists, but not even close to the amount that the US got from Von Braun and the other Germans that came with him. Korolev was most definitely a genius in his own right, and his designs are still in use in updated form and continue to be the workhorses of the Russian space program.

This preliminary shuttle design is certainly prettier than the actual space-shuttle, I wonder if it would be able to handle re-entry.

He's like a movie character, man. Reality is often weirder than fiction.

Wernher von Braun's V2 rocket's terrorized Britain in WW2. The American's are not our friends really; it's just a partnership of convenience.

Did you know that Von Braun unequivocally stated that Disney was the smartest man he’d ever met?

The amount of fuel doesn't matter for the thrust. The thrust is provided by the rocket engines. The fuel amount decides how long the rockets burn, but yes, they have to calculate how many rocket engines at each stage, and how long they need to burn, thereby giving the needed fuel for each stage. Also, the rockets on the later stages are essentially dead weight until the prior stages burn out and drop off, when they have become dead weight.

The name of his vision is interesting, XR-1 especially with hindsight, knowing now, how important the X-15 was.

Review "The Right Stuff", "October Skies" and "Hidden Figures" for the real thing. That and "Duck Dodgers in the 24th and half Century"
