Are sealed box speakers so closed in that differences in barometric pressure impact them?

Often the most interesting aspect of Paul's videos is that it gives us a tiny window in to the mind of those who ask the questions.

The title should be more specific regarding the question. This video only covered 10% of information about sealed enclosures.

Paul: Years ago a majority of speakers, particularly those produced in the New England area utilized the sealed box or “acoustic suspension” design. (Allison, Advent, Acoustic Research, EPI, KLH, etc) The tight, very natural sound, the woofers produced, in my opinion, is a quality that most ported speakers produced today lack.

Really interesting what you said about your tweeter and the pinhole, would never have thought about that.

That’s an interesting incident that you mentioned about your tweeters.

Celestion Kingstons can have issues with temperature and air pressure problems.
The cones popped when on a plane.

Many cheap tweeters, made of mylar (same as the chip bag!), with glued assemblies and sealed backs have a pinhole through the center of the diaphragm for equalization. This is often hidden behind the phase plug/protector, but have a peak and very likely you'll see it. Been done for decades.

Weather, heat, humidity all affect your speaker box alone and none of them are really "airtight".

Next time I get caught stealing my neighbor's bras and panties out of the dryer in the laundry room I'm going to use this idea as part of my excuse.

I did recognize that B&W speaker right away. BTW did you not tell us that you don't like B&W

Can you suggest me a 5.1 DAC chip which has driver support in Windows 11?

Are they airtight enough to be a spaceship or preserve vegtables?

I didn’t know about the expanding chip bags in high altitudes. I just learned something!

A properly built Acoustic Suspension ("Sealed") box should hold water, without leaking.
Once the drivers are installed, pressure equalization takes place through the dust covers on the woofers.

A friend of mine built a pair of sealed boxes where if you pushed the woofers in, they would take 3 or 4 seconds to return to rest position ... and boy oh boy did they rattle the rafters!

From 1000 ft in NE Conn., I can verify that chip bags are puffy, including local brands.

I wonder how many people will cancel their plans to move to Colorado, now that they know potato chip bags are so bloated with thin air there, that you can't feel all the bags and pick out the one that feels like it has a little more chips. If the bag feels 52% full, choose it! Some of us like to get the most value for our money.

Speakers will siund slightly different and different levels, air pressure is very relavent . He meantion in an aircraft which has an artificial pressure. I known for decades (father was an employee of an airline, i flew often) that air pressure can affect speaker performan, it really depends on the speaker, the diffenertvtype of driver, etc. bit unless you are in a very expensive custom aircraft with cabinet stylevspeakers, i do not really think it is enough vto vaseca buying decision on

So the cargo hold of a plane is unprecheurised I thought it was pressurised it shouldn't be a problem

I totally disagree ... solid plastic diaphragm drivers with elastic neoprene surrounds are 100% airtight..! Some cones don't have dust caps and are just like a wok in appearance... So ... atmospheric differences do play a big part . The cabinets need the same tiny pin hole treatment too!
