How to Shift From 2 to 4 Wheel Drive on a Chevrolet Truck

Here is how to shift from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive on a Chevrolet pickup truck with a floor shift lever. Shifting from 2H (2 wheel high) to 4H (4 wheel high) mode is easy and can be done while the truck is in gear and moving. Just shift the floor shifter from 2H to 4H and take your foot off the gas pedal for a second. To shift into 4L mode, get your Chevrolet truck rolling at 3 miles per hour, then put the automatic transmission into neutral and quickly move the floor gear shift lever to 4L (4 wheel drive low) without stopping in neutral. Then put the automatic transmission into Drive and you're done. Neutral on the floor shifter should be used if you are towing your truck. The truck is a 1995 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. This should also work on GMC trucks, which are also made by general motors. Putting a truck into 4 wheel drive mode is easy if you know how to do it.

I've owned my '89 Silverado 1500 for 3 years or so now, and never drove it enough to change it from 2HI to 4LO but now that I know how to correctly, I can finally hit up some trails with my buddies. I know it’s an old video but I was thinking my transfer case was out when I stoped the transfer case in neutral and tried to go into 4low and all it would do is grind but thanks to your video and see how you skip Neutral and go straight into 4 low really fast and it does it with no grinding at all now and works great! I was actually scared to put it in 4 low that fast thinking I would chip off a tooth inside transfer case lol And just so you know your like the only video on here that explains it so perfectly so thanks man!

I stop to put my 99 Silverado into 4 wheel drive and I'm just glad it goes into 4 high from 2 high at all

I thought it read to be stopped and in N (at the automatic transmission) for 4-low, although a very slow speed is possible (which I never do). The swift action into 4-low is key - don't be afraid. Not a slam, but a firm, continuous, complete shift.

The floor shifter is pretty neat. I have the push button without Neutral. Shifting between 2HI and 4HI is seamless. For 4LO, I swap into 4HI (or you can press 4LO and it will do it for you.) then stop, and leave it in drive while you creep forward. When the truck says you are at the right speed (about 2-4 mph), it will kick into 4LO on it’s own. Repeat the process to go back from 4LO to 4HI, then press 2HI to go back to RWD only.
