DID YOU KNOW IN HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX…

There's a surprising inconsistency in the way the Avada Kedavra spell works. In the climax of the movie, when Sirius Black got hit with the deadly curse, he had time to look at Harry and smile before falling through the veil and dying. However, Avada Kedavra is supposed to have an instant kill effect, as shown with Cedric Diggory in the previous movie.
So, what's the deal with this discrepancy? Was it a mistake, or was there something unique about Sirius's situation that allowed him a brief moment before meeting his tragic end? What do you think happened here? Share your theories in the comments!

Because in the book it was not specified that it was Avada Kedavra. So Sirius might got a different curse, stumbled and fell through the Veil, which meant his instant death.

I think it was Sirius love for Harry that allowed him to live for a few more seconds

Like Bellatrix said, you have to mean it. She didn't put her back into it, because they were cousins.

As Harry's godfather, Sirius, was the closest family Harry had left. Sirius loved Harry and wanted to be there for Him. He was also farely powerful wizard. I think his power and his love for Harry was just powerful enough to allow him to hold on for a brief moment. Just long enough to smile at Harry as if to say everything will be okay.

In the books, Sirius was smiling before he got hit, the smile froze in his face and fell behind the veiled door .

My theory- the problem is only in the movie and therefore should not be taken siriously. The canon is different. In the book, the only thing between the two that counts, we don't even know what spell hit the man. He dies because he fell through the veil.

Its shown from Harry's POV
That's why his life slowly drifts away
To everyone else it was instant, but because Harry was so distraught, he saw it almost in slow motion

he didnt die from the curse. it probably was the Stupefy curse anyway and he died when he fell through the veil

Well with the Unforgivable Curses, you HAVE to mean it. Maybe since Bellatrix is party related to Sirius, the Avada Kadavara curse didn’t fully work on Sirius so it just stunned him but he died because he fell back into the Veil

For the Avada Kedavra to work properly and instantly, the one performing the spell needs to mean it. Through out the entire series we see the Avada Kedavra having different colored glow)light.
Take Snape's Avada Kedavra for example, it was blue instead of green since he truly did not want to kill Dumbledore. It is also believed that Dumbledore didn't die because of the Avada Kedavra, but rather due to the height he fell from. The curse might've seriously injured him but it was not enough to kill Dumbledore. Unlike Cedric Diggory's death, it was instant and green because Voldemort was the one who cast it and he meant the curse.

Well I’m the book bellatrix didn’t hit him with the killing curse. She hit him with an unknown spell that pushed him into the veil so there’s that

Bellatrix loved Sirius and didn't do it properly just like how Snape's Avada Kedavra was blue when he killed Dumbledore

In the book, however, this event never occurred. It is indeed difficult to find plot holes in the book. Unlike in the movie, Bellatrix did not use the killing curse, Avada Kedavra. She simply cast the stunning spell, 'Stupefy, ' causing Sirius to fall down. Consequently, Harry's struggle with Lupin to reach Sirius and attempt to save him was motivated by the hope that he might still be alive. If Bellatrix had used Avada Kedavra, Harry would not have made the desperate attempt to reach Sirius, as he would have believed there was no chance of Sirius surviving.

I think there is something deeper. Maybe she didn't really mean the curse, for an unforgivable curse to work you need to really mean it. Maybe there is something we don't know about. He is her cousin. She probably ment it enough tho to do some damage and send him through the vail

I kinda assumed that since Avada Kedavra kills the soul that since he was standing near that portal which looked like it had dead souls in it that the curse hit him, Bellatrix did mean to kill him but the weird soul thing behind him somehow took his soul giving him time to smile.

So... We know there is no way Bellatrix didn't want to kill someone; she was one of the best dark witches, so there is also no way she meant to hit Harry (unless in the books there is a part right before where Sirius and Harry change places... I can't remember).🤔 Could be something related to the Veil?? It couldn't be that Harry saw his soul smile, cuz he didn't have the stone yet. I first thought it it could be a fact related to the fidelius charm, in which the person could share the secret seconds before he dies, but there is no way it works🤔

The thing he was next to that sucked him up. It was locked up in the ministry so it probably had some unique powers.

I have always had this theory that he actually blocked the spell itself and more of fell into the Veil and it took his life, so as he was dying he said “Harry” and then died, so I think it was the ‘knockback’ of the spell and not the actually killing curse.

That’s not how it’s happens in the book, it’s only mentioned a jet of light the colour is not specified and Sirius wasn’t smiling

I think sirius blocked the avada kedavara but because of its force he got through the veil
