I got home from school and went in the back door, the one that opened into the kitchen. Mom was there, as usual, washing out some pots and getting a few things started for dinner. She had a sandwich and chips on the table for me to have after school. Food was one of the ways she showed her love for us kids.
I hung up my coat, plopped into a chair at the table and began wolfing down the sandwich. And waited for it. I'd seen myself in the mirror at school. I knew most of my hair was almost gone and what was left was lopsided and gapped.
