I moved an hour away at 18 years old and never went back. I’d rather struggle and have my own shit .

Your exit strategy is to secure a job that pays over $100k before your 18th birthday at this point.

Everything it's funny when people who don't have real jobs tell people to get their income up and just make it work. As if the reason why people can't buy homes today is because they spend too much.

As soon as I graduated high school my parents charged me room and board. That was a great motivator.

I’m 28, married, got priced out of every city in FL because of CA and NY moving here, especially because of housing shortage. Ended up moving in with my dad. We help him financially pay all bills and almost all of rent. Dad now retired and lives a good life financially going up to his cabin in NC and I run the house in FL. It’s funny how we shame people for living with family in an individualistic society, but it’s normal to take care of family and elders in other societies and cultures. If the reason to be home is mooch and live off parents then yes get out and grow up. But not everyone’s situation is a negative thing. Statistics doesn’t explain the variables 🤷🏼‍♀️ I paid $10k in debt this year living with dad and built up my savings and got my kid in a great school. I don’t feel bad for a second that my dad and I are helping each other out. ❤ we love each other, we have great quality time together, and he has a whole new level of freedom this year since we moved in and honestly to watch him blossom has been priceless 💝💝🎉

That's so true. I don't live with my mom now and i haven't had to in a few years that I moved out with my two kids. I feel like at my big age I'm to old to be living with my mom.

How is it a recipe for disaster? Households with multiple generations under one roof building together towards generational wealth is a great idea.

Yeah, save up for a house and don't pay someone else's mortgage through rent

If you can rent from your parents/in-laws, I think that it’s a win-win-win. This is of course assuming you respect and get along with them. You get cheaper rent and can save the difference for a down payment, they get tenants they love and trust, and the money stays in the family.

Edit: Triggered boomer alert. I apologize for nothing and was not lazy. I’m a homeowner thanks to my smart decision making. Sorry you hate and/or alienated yourself from your family lol.

The exit plan for our kids is a home. Paid for in cash, up front. I don't charge them a dime for rent, utilities, groceries or anything. So long as they're saving to buy in cash, they're good.

yeah sure an exit strategy is important. BUT for some people with crippling debt and part of different cultures it is very important to be at home with your parents as you get yourself together financially and take care of them. There is NO issue being with your parents in your 20s. ONLY YOU know what's best for you, not some guy with a snazzy look talking to you on the internet through a camera

I think having an exit strategy is so important for young adults who are still living at home. It's easy to get comfortable in your childhood bedroom, but eventually, you have to spread your wings and fly. Your tips on saving money and setting goals are really helpful for anyone looking to make that transition. Thanks for sharing!

If your parents have a home, there is no reason to move out.. especially if your parents are in the older age..

In India it is considered to stay with your parents even after getting a stable life. We believe that our parents took care if us when we're not able to. So it's just our turn to take care if them when they are not able too. And don't get me wrong. We all know no matter how much we take care if them, we can never pay off the debt we owe them. It is also believed to make your family happier and more livery. And very less chance if divorce.

Living with my parents is not my ideal situation but it is the reality of my situation, I have an exit plan but I need money first to set it in motion so saving up under their roof has proven to be a useful tool that I will continue to need until I have an income probably double what I make now (I’m 20)

Why?

If your getting laid, have friends, and living life. Who cares where you live?

This is what I call “non advice”. Easy to be a critic of someone else’s life when you have $ and a completely different situation.
