So there are a few things I'd like to mention:

1. I was actually scheduled to get Tesla Solar roof (+ 3 power walls) installed in 2020. 2 weeks before installation, they jacked up the price by 25% and wouldn't explain why. I cancelled.

2. You cannot buy their solar roof solution without also buying at least 1 powerwall

3. If you're going to do solar shingles, it's better to do so if you need a new roof anyway. Ripping off a 3 year old roof to do it is a waste of money

4. While it's aesthetically more pleasing, it produces less power per square foot than solar panels. Then again, they can fit into every inch of available space, as opposed to solar panels, where you might have huge gaps where you can't fit a panel

A friend of mine has one and is very happy with it. Think they’re improving the process.

Normally on a regular roof you get algae or moss growth on your tiles due to rainfall and dew. So, I assume you've to clean your Tesla roof regularly.

ok i live in a verry different part of te world here we cant get those tiles. So i got traditional solar panels.
Before installing my pannels i paid 35K to renew my roof tiles. +-200m2 roof 45° and 25m2 flat roof.
The solar palals cost me 1.26€/wp thats the going rate here i instaled 12600wp on the main roof 128m2
i paid just under 20K for the inverter and connections ext.

the advantige off these tiles is its a compllet fix and you need to see the price as a new roof with panels

There are a number of factors that are in flux. The Powerwall Direct program is now running which can help with pricing. There are more certified Tesla Solar Roof Installers available around the country however these appear to have a larger price for installation however they take care of all aspects of approval and turn-up. Tesla has made improvements in the solar roof shingles. Concerning reliability, I believe people have the option to use more than one inverter. Although the micro-inverter approach talks to a failure of a cluster of cells since there are many more micro-inverters (two orders of magnitude) I am wondering how that affects the MTBF. Lastly, as you mentioned new construction seems to be an easier business case especially since layout problems with penetrations are easy to plan around.

The only real reason I would ever consider Tesla for solar is for their Virtual Power Plant potential, which could be pretty cool down the road. I just hope Enphase takes that idea seriously as well.

Sounds like good things to keep in mind.

Great information. Personally, I think the most ideal roof is standing seam metal with panels mounted over it.

by inputting you your location and your average power bill lets you figure out your kw usage. it really just simple math.

Still waiting on my solar roof and Tesla keeps trying to get me to cancel it.

I plan on building a new house in about 3 years. Installing the solar roof without an old roof tear down should save me money. My concern is the coordination between Tesla, installers and my contractor. The last thing I want is roof wood panels to sit up there unprotected for 7 months.

The solar credit is a "nonrefundable" tax credit, which means you won't receive any benefit if you already receive a tax refund.

I heard they pretty much pulled out of the solar tile market.

With current interest rate at 6.99% and the total cost itself, it's not really affordable to the average household. Their estimate comes to around 200k, this will take me over 40 yrs to recoup the cost. My current electric bill averages at 300/mo. With the load payment, it will be at 700/mo. If the government is serious about this, they could at least provide some type of assistance will the finance part.

I wish you’d stop showing the slate looking tiles. Tesla doesn’t offer them. 🤨

What I don't understand is why does Tesla make their solar tiles install like actual tiles. That level of detail is unnecessary.
Why don't they just make large solar panels that fit onto the roof from edge to edge and simply look like tiles? Faux tiles in modulars panels? Then that way you would still just need to run the track and then lift, place and connect.
The intended purpose of the tiles is to "look" like tiles. They don't actually have to be individual tiles.
This effect can still be done with single unit solar panels. It is only along the edges and in areas specific to the location being fitted that there would need to be pieces custom-made. And even in those cases those pieces can also be prefabbed in a factory and then taken to the site and installed.. Large areas of a roof can still be covered with large, standardized size, mass produced, single units that simply look like tiles to the naked eye.

Either I just realized a major flaw in the Tesla tiles by stating the obvious, or this idea has already been thought of.
Which is it?
