Fun fact about Obsidian: in real life it's a form of naturally occuring volcanic glass (hence why producing it in Minecraft is connected to lava), and it can be used to create some of the sharpest blades known to man, with cutting edges only about 3 nanometres thick - far sharper than a cutting edge fashioned from pretty much any metal. As Grian mentioned, it's also extremely brittle which does limit its use to very specialised cases, but I think it's really cool.

Fun fact: Apparently, when real life miners find precious stones like quartz or amethyst, they have to ditch their more powerful tools and mine them out with things like sticks!

A guy on my favorite server is an actual miner and he told me about this - I wonder how he felt when Minecraft gave him much more leeway.
