This is why waste management needs regulation.

When a person does this, they get immediately arrested and punished.

When a company or the government do it, it's only a tragic accident and only pay some compensations.

The wild thing is that the chemical company ACTUALLY TRIED TO WARN THEM. They said that the chemical waste was too dangerous for water pipes. AND THE HOUSING DEVELOPMENT COMPANY STILL BUILT THERE.

Hi! Current resident of Niagra Falls (not love canal, but near by), this has had not only long term physical health effects on the residents, but also lasting psychological damage! The whole city is overrun with mental health issues, drug addicts, the school is underperforming, and homelessness, and gangs are practically the only career options for most people.

That's why the city has pumped so much money into the tourist areas outside the park. They've deemed the residential areas all but a lost cause. Go too far outside the tourist attraction and you'll end up surrounded by abandoned buildings and drug dens.

And where is the responsibility in this? Soneone KNEW who sold this land that this was toxic. Go back in the records... someone needs to be sued & go to prison.

And this is why every time I hear a politician talk about cutting regulations, I get nervous.

For those who care, this incident wasn't entirely on the chemical company, Hooker Chemical. After the dumping of the waste (mind you, environmental concerns weren't much of a factor in the 1940s-60s), the company was facing eminent domain from local government and was forced to sell to the local school board. In the contracts, it was stated that waste was on the land and Hooker Chemical advised strongly against building any infrastructure that would require underground facilities (sewers, water lines, etc). The suggested use of the land was a park and/or school over the non-filled areas. The school board and city, however, rejected those ideas and developed how they saw fit. Other areas of the land were later sold/released to private contractors for development without forewarning of the waste. What this did was break through a clay cap over the waste that allowed rainwater to pull chemicals and waste out of the "controlled environment" underground. Essentially, everyone except the residents were at fault here. Primarily the local government, but it's important to not go on a witch hunt after a company that only played a small part in this.

I studied everything about Love Canal from library books. It was actually named after a man named Love. In the 1950s, Hookers Chemical and Plastic Corporation sold 16 acres of hazardous land fill to the Board of Education for $1. Then in late 1970s chemical drums rised to the surface and causing the worst chemical disaster of all time.

That's the reason for government regulations. Large companies will always avoid paying more for anything including privacy and waste management.

Same here in Belgium. During ww2 some Belgian company used to dig uranium in Belgian-Congo. And burried the waste were are now residentials (near Antwerp i think).
(Fun) fact: the Uranium of that same company was used in the American nuclear bombs that dropped in Japan (Heroshima, Nagasaki).
There is a Belgian docu about it called 'bad bad Belgium'.

Sorry for my bad English. Hope you enjoy my comment :)
