1980s - ROSE BLUMKIN - Omaha's Nebraska Furniture Mart - Mrs. B.

A little gem of a 1980s NBC News story about Rose Blumkin, better known to folks in Omaha as "Mrs. B.". Rose Blumkin apparently was a fixture in Omaha, and ran a HUGE furniture store in Nebraska. Please don't confuse Mrs. Blumkin with that dirty word "BLUMPKIN". That's not nice.

When Buffett bought the Furniture Mart, he thought that Blumkin would retire, and didn't put a non-compete clause in the sale contract. Boy, was he ever wrong. At that point, Mrs. B. started Mrs. B.'s Factory Clearance Outlet, which is just to the east of the big Mart warehouse. So then Buffett came back to add her new store to the Mart family, and this time he put a non-compete clause in the contract. She was absolutely unstoppable.

She is the perfect example of the American dream. Notice it took her 20 YEARS to save up 2, 500 to open shop. This was in another documentary, goes to show, there is no such thing as fast money as you see today on Youtube, and its still the same, wealth TAKES TIME. Funny story about this. After Warren Buffet bought her Nebraska Furniture Mart, she retired for all of 4 months at 95 years old. Then she got bored, realized Buffet never made her sign a noncompete clause, and came out of retirement and started a competitor store right across the street from NFM, which became so successful that Buffet ended up buying that one from her too just 3 years later!
