Mother cats typically stop caring for their babies when they’re weaned. In the wild, at this point (8 to 10 weeks old), the mother will abandon the kittens and leave them to fend for themselves.
It’s a process that takes a few weeks of gradual independance and teaching the kitten hunting skills.
So typically, if the kitten is old enough and fully weaned (has entirely switched form maternal milk to solid food), there will not be a heartbreaking separation from the mom.
Unless there is a specific concern here, this is too young to separate the kitten properly.
It can be helped and the kitten can survive since he’s with a human, but this is unnecessarily traumatic for the kitten.
If the mother hasn’t stopped caring for the cat, or if the cat is less than 8-12 weeks old, do not separate them unless there are other medical or specific concerns. They’re just babies.
