The meaning of this poem is actually one of Bukowski's strongest.
He is asking you to be an intelligent, open-minded human hard that may be.

The poem is really not very kind at all and has a narly senseless ending from the poet who did not age very kindly himself. It ends like a drunken bum plunges on the floor unceremoniously and never gets up again

Your reading is good but it doesn't suit bukowski's style. A strong voice is rather suited for bukowski (Subjective opinion)
