USCGC Eagle // America's Tall Ship

Why use a sailing ship from the past to teach the officers of tomorrow?
Because the ways of old still have much to teach.

The 295-foot Barque Eagle is the flagship of the U.S. Coast Guard. She serves as a training vessel for cadets at the Coast Guard Academy and candidates from the Officer Candidate School. The Eagle is the only active-duty sailing vessel in America's military, and one of only two commissioned sailing vessels, along with the USS Constitution.

I sailed on her as an enlisted MK3 EOW, down the engine room. Op-Sail 76’ tall ship race from Bermuda to New York City. On July 4 I had duty and I climbed the Main Mast to the top and watched the fireworks over the Statue of Liberty and took pictures with my Kodac 110 Instamatic camera my mom gave me as a going away present when I entered boot camp. Memories that last a life time!

My father commended the USCG Academy because (at least in 1972) there were no political appointments and such, compared to the other military academies. I thought they looked sharp but, unfortunately, I was excluded from military service because of my bad eyesight. I did actually get a nomination to West Point and even tried to enlist in the Army, but I could never pass the damn physical.

One can't help but wonder, since this is a commissioned active-duty vessel, if there are any armaments aboard.
