This was certainly an upset! So the Golden Globes occurred last week and usually you can take it as a beacon of what to expect at the upcoming Oscars, academy organisation kept in mind and all! And while there are multiple big competitors for the 2024 roster, Pixar's Inside Out 2, DreamWorks' The Wild Robot, Aardman's Wallace & Gromit Vengance Most Fowl. But no. Flow was the movie that ended up on top. So what does this mean for the next event? And how do I think things will roll out? Here's all our thoughts on it all as we talk about The Surprise Animation Golden Globes Winner...

Flow had such a unique effect on me. You know how some games feel more like a movie than a game? Flow felt like a game that's a film. I could so vividly imagine myself playing parts of it, I WISH this film gets a game adaptation. It NEEDS one.

I think what sets Flow apart from the other nominations is the fact that it doesn't include dialogue meaning it had to rely on visuals alone. Having a movie that has its focus purely on the animation and cinematography really helps to push it forward in its ways of storytelling. Cus yes while things like the wild robot have a clear visual storytelling, you can still pick up on the film's storyline through the characters' dialogue. Because Flow lacked dialogue there were a lot of moments (especially down times after major events) where you actually had to be watching instead of listening (since some ppl including myself like to listen to movies and shows while doing something else) to get the full picture.
So I feel like Flow deserves the Golden Globes animation award for the fact that its animation was its major focus and driving factor. Yes the other nominations had amazing animation as well but they had dialogue which would've helped with things like world building, character development and exposition since Flow lack that it had to rely on it's animation and visuals alone to showcase those elements.

As an animator and a latvian, I'm very happy that the movie won the award because not only was it the first Golden Globe win for our country, but also because the win helped our country to stand out more and possibly get more eyes on Latvia's future animation endeavors, which is a very thrilling aspect!

That being said, I watched the movie with some of my friends in the theater and honestly, it didn't feel that special for me. We all also thought that The Bird Scene (no spoilers) was out of nowhere and we didn't really understand that part. Don't get me wrong, the movie was still beautiful and it definitely stood out from other movies because there was no dialogue. It was unique, but, knowing our culture and our previous animated shortfilms (cause latvians used to make those for themselves), Flow felt like one of those 15 minute short films but on a much higher budget and much longer. Why I'm saying that is because usually those short films were about one specific character and we'd follow it throughout one event that has happened in their lives. And most of the times, it is very mysterious and cryptic, cause we don't get any specific information on the happenings, so the viewer is left guessing the bigger story or what's the deeper meaning behind the short film. Flow was very similar in that regard. Which isn't bad, it's just something that I'm used to when it comes to latvian media, so it wasn't anything new for me personally. Still a great watch though!

Yeah, these awards bodies have no integrity whatsoever. Flow is an anomaly among the stereotypical bought wins from the big studios.

As someone who just watched Flow in a theater filled with all ages, this surprise award win makes me happy for the future of animation as a medium. It really is an enjoyable film that doesn't overstay its welcome but really makes you mesmerized by the animals and their world. The fact that it has zero dialogue really helps the animation shine even more, and I'm glad kids can see an animated film weave a story that they can follow that doesn't treat them like mere children by dumbing down scenarios and just lets them observe & figure out things themselves.

More of this, please. If Flow wins the Oscar over The Wild Robot, I would be okay with this. Both films deserve it though.

Finally watched Flow yesterday and it was absolutely incredible. I personally think The Wild Robot is better, but I’m glad these two are contenders and have gotten a lot of praise when they’ve been up against powerhouses like Moana 2 and Inside Out 2

As someone who really latched on to The Wild Robot (both the film and the books), I popped off when I heard Flow won. Despite my personal preference for TWR, the fact that this little indie, dialogueless, Blender-animated film won over the big names is, in my mind, an absolutely massive W for animation as a whole. I still think that, realistically, Flow isn't going to win the Oscar, simply because these things Always lean so heavily towards the big influential studio powerhouses (yeah, BH6, we're looking at you. I like you and all, but you are no Song of the Sea or Kaguya), so my bets are on The Wild Robot (my personal pick) or Inside Out 2 (which I honestly didn't care for, but whatever) - but if I'm proven wrong and Flow takes it, shit, I'd be happy as hell about it!

I have a burning hated for the fact that awards for games and movies have a massive Bias for things that came out recently

i havent watched either of flow or the wild robot yet but im honestly proud a new animated studio that isn't as big as dreamworks or disney won instead. more studios deserve that chance. disney definitely doesn't because of the path they chose. congrats i wanna watch flow sometime soon.

When I first watched Flow, I've always thought the animation style looked similar to The Wild Robot.

Might I remind you that this film had a 3.7 million budget

And some other films like Inside Out 2 and The Wild Robot had above 60 million

The official Academy Awards for best animated feature will go to the Wild Robot, I am calling it here, the Golden Globes has a tendancy to give the reward to smaller more obscure productions but the official academy has never given the reward to any film exept a large budget one made by a prominent studio

I was hoping for the wild robot to win, but I am very happy it was a amazing film like Flow and not a Disney or other film. I have yet to be able to see it, but when I get the chance I will.

Saw the wild robot in Theaters and cried. Was on a multi hour plane ride and it was on the tv thing and I watched it again and teared up a bit, though it was incredibly compressed and did not look as good as it did in theaters as in was on such a small screen. Sad that wild robot didn’t win, but I’m happy that it lost to Flow rather than any other film. As the wolf robot had dreamworks, a large studio to back and advertise for it and promote it. But flow is made by a smaller studio and didn’t have that. And this win will be a sign that any film smaller or big can win and that’s amazing,
