A lot of people say this relationship is toxic but...

1. Dean lied and cheated, tried to keep her in a narrow little world that suited him not her. Isn't that toxic?

2. Rio sees Beth for who she really is, both the light and dark aspects.

3. Rio doesn't treat her like a doll/a victim. He treats her like the strong woman she is

4. Beth is never more empowered and fierce as she is than when she is with Rio.

5. Rio obviously wants her body but he is absolutely turned on by her skills and brain.

6. There's definitely an aspect of mentor and student, and when she does well you can tell he is proud and doesn't feel emasculated by her growing confidence and independence.

Now, I totally get that the world he operates in is criminal, but is their relationship toxic? I'm not so sure.

I just realized why his character works so well, besides the eye-candy obvious, he’s written like a vampire. He appear and disappears, always clad in black, can’t be killed and glides instead of walking. He’s very still and only moves to strike or cause orgasm. And he has long canines😅. He needs his own vampire series after this.
