Very useful Mike. I have the Sorby pro, but it shouldn't too difficult to adapt this method to a belt grinder.

One problem though, YouTube now insists on recommending for me videos on how to file my fingernails and other ways to make them pretty, it's opened up a whole new world for me :-)

I destroyed a bowl gouge but after watching and following your tips and advice, I have successfully put my blunder right and now have a sharp bowl gouge again. Big thanks Mike 😊

For some reason it took watching your video for me to understand the whole process of shaping a spindle gouge in to a detail gouge. Thanks.

Featured in the "AAWs Keep Turning Newsletter" August 2019.
You keep getting validation from the American Association of Woodturners—not surprising. Kudos!
All the best,

From Neath. Thanks Mike. I am a novice to turning and sharpening tools, only turned them blue so far. Watched this and followed your process wow what a difference. Have 3/8 bowl gouge now that is a pleasure to use. Will do the same to my 1/2 inch bowl gouge. Thanks again.

Very good demonstration and very clearly explained Mike! This method provides a great reference point with starting from the upside down grind to aim the jig grind towards. Thanks for sharing!
Happy turning,

Thanks for the video. I have watched numerous sharpening videos as a new turner but not had great success until yesterday. Thanks again.

Thanks Mike. I use the same outfit that you use, but I have never started the way you do. I almost always get the "humps" on the wings so I am going to give your way a go and see what happens.

Thanks Mike. So many videos out there but many have steps assumed or left out. Whatever little I didn't get😉 from your video I can work out between me and the grinder!

Thanks for the informative video. I have been struggling to get the grind right. With this simple technique it should no longer be a problem. I must have ground 2” off my gouge trying to do this the hard way. Thank you again for clearing this up.

Hello Mike. I have been watching your videos for the last 6 or so months, and i have loved watching seeing all the different things you have done with your beautiful lathe. I especially lived the video on how you clean your work shop, i had a great laugh with that one. keep up the videos and turning mate.

Good explanation and demo of a problem that vexes many novice turners, some who have been turning for years.

Hi Mike, Just had to say, I reshaped my bowl gouge to fingernail profile and what a difference it makes. That standard grind is bloody awful! If i even thought about picking it up i'd get a catch, but with the fingernail grind it's like a whole other tool. I'm probably gonna change my spindle gouges too. thanks very much!
