500 years ago, this was the place from where entire South India was ruled by Vijayanagara empire. Hampi is one of the greatest ever heritage cities in the world. It was the 3rd biggest city in the world after Beijing and Rome during the time of its significance.

If Vijaynagar not lost in Talikote, Today Humpi would have been massive and Rich city in the world. Karnataka state largest city.

The whole city was full of gardens, and because of them, as an Italian visitor in 1420, Nicolo Conti writes, the circumference of the city was sixty miles. A later visitor was Paes, a Portuguese who came in 1522 after having visited the Italian cities of the Renaissance. The city of Vijayanagar, he says, is as "large as Rome and very beautiful to the sight"; it is full of charm and wonder with its innumerable lakes and waterways and fruit gardens. I salute the emperors of Vijayanagara. They were true Indian rulers who built their wonderful capital for the empire and also promoted Arts, Literature, Nritya and all. I feel proud to be Indian when I go through the history of the Greate Vijayanagara.

I was operating India's first white water jet boat in the rapids on the upper Ganges upstream of Rishikesh from November to March. The rest of the year I was free to travel. From there I hiked to some of the Temples of Shiva. Came face to face with a tiger, wild elephants and black leopards. There is so much to see, do and learn in India. It was a trip to Hampi 27 years ago that started me on a many year hiking adventures in western India. Now I am worn out at age 70 and a very happy guy I did what I could when I was young enough to do it. Don't wait!

THE STORY OF HAMPI: The Vijaynagar Empire was one of the most powerful in the World. Hampi, their caipital, is said to have been 60 miles in scope. A Persian traveler to Hampi described it as “the most beautiful city that has ever entered the pupil of the eye”. It was ravaged by the Deccan Sultanates in the Battle of Talikot in 1565. The Vijaynagar Empire was winning the battle when suddenly, two of the Muslim generals of Vijaynagar committed treason and beheaded Rama Raya, the King of Vijaynagar. His army became disorganized without their leader and were scattered. These are ruins of the once great civilization. The Deccan Muslim Sultans worked day and night with fire and iron rods to destroy Hampi. It is said they took 5 months to reduce the city to rubble. They is the story of Hampi
