There was an upholstery silk trimming weaver who worked and lived in Monmouth Street, in the heart of ‘The Dials’.

Although he had a tough old life, he worked hard and found his way out to Sydenham by the late 1800’s.

If he hadn’t, I wouldn’t be here - he was my great grandad.

Seven Dials was always called Seven Dials, even when it was a rookery. The original column from the middle is now a memorial to a Duchess of York in Weybridge, and the dial stone from the top is on display round the back of Weybridge library where nobody ever goes.

when the condemned were offered a drink so was the driver but he would always refuse because he was "on the wagon" this I was told many years ago was the origin of the saying. Does any one know if it is true?

I never knew Leopards had a Patron Saint or that London had some many - learn something new every day.

One of my memories of Denmark Street was it being the location of the original Forbidden Planet sci-fic/comic-book store...with its wooden floor etc.

Yes, I love this kind of thing, longer and more of it is what I meant. Since I am in the US, I have to live through Google maps and street view. It gives meaning to my explorations. Thank you for your reply. Rob

Pretty interesting. The Nazi dog one is the best of the playlist so far though, especially his military escort, very funny.

who else wants to travel back in time with an insurgent and run everyone in the 1800s and 1100s?

(i was joking about the running over part, but i still want to drive it around the towns)

You forgot to mention that this is where the phrase "stay on the wagon" comes from. If prisoners didn't want a drink they would literally stay on the wagon.
