I have an idea for a addon for Starship. A ring of (nuclear\Ion electric etc.?) powered propulsion engines. As many for max. performance as possible. This "powerRing" would be launched in segments ( maybe 4 launches of sharship or more) and to be assembled in orbit. Once assembled it stays in space and never re-enters any atmospheres. For a mission to Mars after a starship is re-fueled in low Earth orbit the starship would then rendezvous with the powerRing and then ring shape would open to allow the ship to position itself and then close to attach around the hull of the starship.

Once configured for I.T.M. Interplanetary Transport Mode the Starship would depart LEO for LMO. It's in this mode that the powerRing is used. After the Mars orbit injection burn is done by the starship the powerRing can be used to continuously accelerate and then continuously brake upon arrival. Reducing the time spent traveling in radioactive deep space and conserving considerable amounts of the starships departure fuel. Meaning less refueling [perhaps none] is needed on the surface before a return trip is possible.

Once in Mars orbit the ring would detach and open to allow the starship to maneuver away from the powerRing. Then leaving the powerRing in Mars orbit the starship itself would make entry into the Mars atmosphere and land on the surface.

When ready to leave the starship launches again, putting itself in a rendezvous orbit with the powerRing. They once again configure Interplanetary transport mode and head back to Earth orbit. Once back in LEO, the powerRing is detached and left in orbit while the starship lands back on the surface of Earth.
