Deracinated

I was a Father, I was a Son, I was a lover

I was once young

I had dreams, I taught, I travelled

I laughed and drank, ate, savoured and wasted time

I bled and felt wrecked, regrouped, healed

Mind collected, then fled

I flew the coop, settled and nurtured

I read and discussed, proved points and was wrong

I learnt and developed, wrote and listened

I breather in, I wheezed, I brewed infection

I heaved, I fell, I got back up, I worked always

Now I am here

Static

I am a set of failing organs, I am rates, I am measurements

I am 'Get Well Soon' cards sent from people who don't know what to say to the dying

Hope to see you soon, they say

I am awkward conversations about weather

I am sitting in the same spot, then moved every 4 hours

I am crying when no one is looking

I am sickly, I am thin, I am unsettled

I am uncomfortable in my own skin

For someone who had his 'fingers in many pies'

I am hungry but now I cannot bring myself to eat

I am lonely, I am longing...I am in love

I am in love

I feel loved, I must be mindful

I am now appreciation, I am now every moment

I am reborn before I leave

I am read to, I hang on every word

I cry when my wife is there

I am reassured, I am realistic, I receive comfort

I accept the pills, the treatment

I have some time, even if just for now, like, now

I don't mourn my loss because I exist now

My wife reminded me of that

I am still alive

I am appreciated

I grow roots again

I stand strong, even if I cannot stand
