I never saw him as short. He was a kid. Kids are short. And he hits puberty by the end of the series while alphonse is still in armor. The nutrient thing was just a gag I think.

I always felt like it was just because he never drank milk, or the fact that they bring up when Al, Ed and Winry go to Rush Valley, that his automail was just too heavy, like how slouching can affect the way your spine is positioned to give you a hunchback

Just to clarify one thing you said FMA wasn’t publish in Shonen Jump or even by Shueisha it was published by Square Enix in Monthly Shonen Gangan

Not to be that guy, but FMA didn't run in Shonen Jump. It ran in a different Shonen magazine called Gangan, which is published by SquareEnix and is the same magazine that Soul Eater ran in. IIRC Jump wasn't interested in FMA (they have a history of that).

Wasn't he short because the nutrients needed to sustain Al's original body on the other side of the gate was taken from him? Not to keep Al's soul on the amor since we've seen other characters like Al's whose souls were bound on armors.
