I got the original version by way of a very generous trade on my part a couple years back. Good, but not great. The special workers are all pretty basic in terms of the benefits they grant, rather than bending or breaking the rules in interesting ways that lend themselves to new strategies. If you send a merchant in a colonist's spot, you get some free money once. Send a missionary, get a free colonist. Send a builder, get some VP. They really don't feel like special abilities per se,  just a single-use bonus or discount.

Then there's the rest of the gameplay. Pretty basic area majority, warfare, and set collection systems. Just had really high expectations based on The Dice Tower crew's raves I guess. I'll give it props for being a good gateway into worker placement though, and I can see where folks who otherwise don't care for many worker placement games might love it for all the theme and bling.

So, recommendations for civ builing games? I'm looking for one and I'm having trouble making up my mind. This looks nice, but it worries me you mentioning the "classic" feel ofit

Its definitely possible the Ottomans are overpowered as they are not in the standard store bought version that I purchased (for $100). And i tend to assume if something is overpowered its one of the "extras".

An interesting variant to deal with these is to have ppl bid part of their starting money to choose which empire they want. This can make it so someone who values a certain power may end up sacrificing their chance at a good building in turns 1-2.

around 160 dollars for the game here in Belgium. I do think it's to much money for just one game sadley. To bad they didn't reprint it as a normal game instead of a deluxe version.

This is a great game, although I have the previous edition.
