I can now see where Miyazaki got the idea of the Scared Deer of the forest from Princess Mononoke.

Thank you sir. Your explanation and another from someone else makes the film so much better. I loved it as it was, I was so drawn in for a full 2 hours and I knew there was much more to it.

Iphigenia, is a compound word: Iphi+genia, which in greek mean power+generation! So her name meant that she was of a "powerful origin"!!

that's why I like Artemis. Unlike Athena, she is actually wiser than the goddess of wisdom. She is not jealous of anyone. she don't fight for a golden apple of discord. & she is not included in affairs & sexual activities.

After seeing a lot of your great vids I think Iphigenia if you can call it lucky as it wasn't her fault to be in this situation that it was Artemis she came across and not Hera in similar circumstances Hera would have been still blinded by her rage and would have demanded sacrifice despite Iphigenia being brave and unselfish

There is another scenario that needs to be understood when discussing the myth of Iphigenia. She may not have been the daughter of Agamemnon, but rather, the daughter of Spartan Helen and Theseus of Athens, for it was Theseus who first abducted Helen and the older myths tell us that when her brothers - the Dioskouri rescued her she was with child. Also Iphianassa and Iphigenia are very likely the same character - the name change occurring because the Athenians and the original Spartans would have spoken a pre-Hellenic language. At some point the name 'Iphianassa' meaning 'strong queen' has been Hellenised to 'Iphigenia' - 'strong born.'

If you liked that movie, could I recommend the movie 'Metamorphosis' ... It is a very beautiful update on classic tales including the Actaeon, all of which are told as sympathetically to the source material as possible with as little dialogue as possible and as quickly as possible!

This reminds me of the sacrifice of Abraham' son to God.

I've heard and read this tale before, but this is the first time I've heard of a happy ending. Normally, the sacrifice is completed, the winds return, and the ships set sail.

Cool this story resonates with the one of Abraham and Isaac from the old testament in the hebrew bible.
