Book: Knockin' on Wood

This is a great book about Peg Leg Bates! A WARNING FOR PARENTS: Please watch this video first! This book talks about a few things that can be a little hard to discuss and divisive. I usually edit these parts when reading but decided to read the book as it is because I think it could spark some important conversations. Conversations that I don't always feel comfortable addressing in class, but you as parents and caregivers most likely already have. The first topic is that Bates loses his leg in an accident. This can be scary. I try to emphasize that it would NEVER happen today. The next is that his mother prays to and references the Lord. Religion is tricky, and it's definitely the territory of a parent, not dance teacher :)! The third is that book deals not only with Bates' disability but with his race. At the end of the video I address this. Please please let me know if I say anything that offends anyone or if you feel that there is a better way of handling this subject matter.
